“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”
- 1 Corinthians 9:24
Growing up with two older brothers, racing was something we did all the time; it was a way of life. We had foot races, bike races, swimming races, and horse races; if there was any possible way to race, we did. If you want to win there are some important practices to remember when you race. One is not to get distracted by what is around you or what is happening behind you. Another is to never slow down too early, and yet another is to run your very hardest all the way through the finish line.
We face these same struggles in life too. We will be focused on what God has called us to, and then all of a sudden we start looking at what someone else is doing and get distracted or we start thinking about what is behind us, our past, and we lose focus of what God has ahead for us and miss out. Or maybe everything in our lives is going pretty smoothly, so we begin coasting in our relationship with God. Then before we know it, life happens and we are caught off guard and struggling to continue.
So how do we run in such a way as to get the prize? We have to keep ourselves focused on him and his calling for our lives. Don’t let what others do and say, or your past triumphs or failures take your focus off of Jesus. Live every day like you need him desperately. Don’t slack off in your daily time with God; treasure your personal time with him each day. Living our lives for Christ means living full out, 100% focused on him.
God, thank you that because of you we can win in life! You call us to do great things through you and are faithful to help us when hard times come. Help us, God, to keep our eyes, hearts, and minds focused on you and to follow after you everyday.
