“For if you refuse to act kindly, you can hardly expect to be treated kindly. Kind mercy wins over harsh judgment every time.”
- James 2:13 MSG
Why is it that we expect to get more than we are willing to give? This often plays out in our day-to-day lives in the area of kindness. The world understands the importance and value of kindness. We see the worst of people who are willing to give a few bucks to help someone down on their luck. We see total strangers that will come to the aid of someone being hurt or abused. From time to time people will open a door, let us out in traffic, and pay for our coffee all in the name of kindness.
I want you to examine your own life for a minute. Are people kind to you? Are you kind in every area of your life? Do you go out of the way to show kindness to those around you?
Luke said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31 That means we need to be the FIRST one to do the right thing and not wait for someone to be kind to us first. One of the greatest acts of love we can do for the people around us is to be kind. We may never know how one kind word or gesture could change the course of someone’s day.
Remember this each time you’re tempted to respond the wrong way… “Your kindness will reward you, but your cruelty will destroy you.” Proverbs 11:17 NLT
Next time you become angry or upset remember that kindness wins EVERY TIME!
Jesus, help me to act in kindness every single day. Help me to see ways that I can show your love to the people around me through kindness. Let kindness be the response in my most frustrating and discouraging times in my life. Help me to be kind to people I just meet and to the ones that know me the best.
