You Get What You Give
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
- Luke 6:38
I RECENTLY HAD breakfast with a successful businessman that has made several smart investments. I asked him, “What has been the key to your success?” He replied by saying that you get out of every investment what you put into it. That response stuck with me not because it was good advice but it’s a spiritual principle that Jesus taught his followers. Jesus said, “Give and it will be given to you.” Most people immediately associate this to money but Jesus is not just speaking of money, but he is connecting giving to living. What an incredible life-changing truth.
This means if you give grace, you will receive grace. If you give forgiveness, then you will receive forgiveness. Did you catch that?! The amount of abundance that we have is in direct proportion to what we give. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. When I hear this verse I always think of root beer floats, which is one of my favorite summer time desserts. Whenever I load my cup full of ice cream and pour root beer soda in the cup it bubbles up and runs over. Jesus was saying that our lives will run over with the good things that we give to others. In fact, he reminds us that with the measure we use, it will be measured back to us. Give a little and you will get a little. Give a lot and you can expect a lot!
Jesus’ words motivate me to give more and expect more. What are you lacking in your life today? Consider giving more of what you are lacking so that you can receive more of what you need. Giving always releases God’s abundance. I have learned that the key to receiving God’s abundance is an open heart and an open hand. When our heart and our hands are open we can both give and receive! When our hearts are closed and our hands are clinched God is limited to what he can do through you and what he can give to you. Let’s live life today with open hearts and open hands.
Thank you God for demonstrating the power of generous giving. There is nothing that I have today that you have not given to me. You gave us your very own son so that I could have life. Help me to give a good measure of grace and goodness to others. I choose to live with an open heart and open hands, so that I can be a blessing to others and receive every blessing that you have for me.
